The Inevitable

It's Friday here which means that it's my day off.  I went shopping with Lilah today to AirPort West Shopping Centre and Target was our first stop.

Before we even walked in I knew I was headed for trouble.  Through the glass was a display climbing contraption smack dab in the middle of the Ladies clothing.  Ofcourse it had a sign on it that read "Please do not climb".  This thing was right as you walk in the door and could not be missed by any toddler.  And ofcourse, my toddler didn't miss it.

Lilah ran straight for it and kept saying 'slide slide".   I reluctantly let her play on it for a few minutes.  I stood there in the middle of the ladies clothing section preparing myself for the screaming, and back arching when I told her it was time to go and to get off the apparatus.

I said in a nice voice "ok, come on now Lulu, it's time to go" - she ignored me.  I said it again in a nice tone of voice and attempted to grab her hand, but it she quickly flung it away and kept on going.  I knew.  I knew I was in for a fight...in Target, close to the entrance where people are walking in and out and would be staring at me.  Also, remember that this climbing structure is in front of the glass so all the people outside Target that are sitting down at the coffee place enjoying their cuppa will be seeing my toddler screaming and flailing herself all over the place.

So I stood there for another few minutes because I just wasn't ready to have this fight with my 21 month old.

I finally grabbed her hand and just as she's about to fling it away and say "Noooooo", I grabbed it a little tighter and tried re-directing her away from the structure.  She then turned into this pasta noodle flopping all over the floor and screaming.

I'd say that i'm relatively new to this toddler tantrum throwing thing because Eve never did this type of thing.  She was always so good, and I could coax her into leaving something like this without a fight.  Lilah is such a different child and I knew the inevitable was going to happen when I attempted to take her away from playing.

I am that mom now.  I'm that mom in Target and the supermarket with the screaming child.

What do you do when your child throws a fit in public??

Oh I totally understand! My boys would be on that within seconds flat. And I would have both of them screaming, and I would have to leave the store. What were they thinking putting that up in the middle of the store and then expecting little kids to not go on it. That's just ridiculous! The employee that decided to put that up is obviously Not a parent.

I do too! Mine is 16months and has already begun throwing tantrums whenever i take away something she wants (usually those things she's not supposed to grab) or i politely invite her to leave the park with me. I had read they started at 2 and she's not even 1 1/2! I'm really looking forward to reading what others have done

Hi! I'm a new follower from LMM. :)

Oh boy, I know too well the tantrum throwing in public. Always in public to cause a scene and make me feel so tiny in totally huge embarrasement. I have 6 kids, 3 are adults and 3 are little girls. My 6 yr old has special needs so her tantrums are extreme and once it starts there is no calming her down. I would need to physically pick her up and drag her out of the store while she was kicking and screaming like I was abducting her. Took her outside till she felt it was time to stop and then warned her about dragging her back out if she continued once we went back in. She has super strength and fights me everytime I have to take her out. I have total sympathy for any parent with a child who is having a melt down. Especially because their child may have special needs too and there may be nothing that parent can do to calm the child down.

Just been looking through some of your posts (sent here through LMM), I think you will become a new fave of mine =) this kind of thing happens to me all the time, depending on my mood, I pick my son up very calmly and just walk away, trying to handle the kicking and wriggling. Or if it's a bad day, I will do the same as you, I will take his hand and try and gently pull him until he finally comes (of course I don't yank him away - didn't mean it to sound that way hehe). Or, I tell him I am going and say bye, take a couple of steps, this is usually enough to make him come with me.

It's hard sometimes, everyone looks at you as if your not doing anything to stop this, sometimes you get sympathetic comments, but eventually it will stop (unless of course my son is like my sister who would have a tantrum at 8 years old in the line at the supermarket because she wanted a chocolate bar- I hope not)

I am here from LMM. I also have a toddler. A 26 month old boy. I said I would neve rbe that mom and like you, I am that mom. It frequently is in Target as well since we go there every week. Sometimes if I prepare him in advance and we "talk" about what we are doing and how we have to leave and no crying will occur he does better. But lets face it, he is a toddler and throws me off every day!

Hi! Stopping by via Little Miss Momma!!!

I feel for you in the tantrum department. My daughter is 26 months old, but I feel like we have been int he terrible-two's since she was 15 months old. One day when she was screaming in the shopping cart for no reason, I just told her to scream louder because they couldn't hear her in the sporting goods department yet. She eventually calmed down. Lol...I couldn't walk out on a basket of groceries. I got some pretty nasty looks, but whatever. You can't reason with toddlers...and it happens to every mom. So you've got millions of sympathizers. :)

Mandys Creative Corner said...

My son is a professional tantrum thrower. I bragged about how amazing he was when he was a baby at going and spending all day with me shopping, but right around his 2nd birthday it took a terrible turn. Since then I have officially been "that mom" in every store I shop in =( Once in Walmart I actually had one of the sales people ask me if he was my child because he was fighting me so bad they thought I might have stolen him... I have left more full shopping carts in more stores than I can count, because I couldn't take it anymore and had to carry him to the car and leave.

For a while there I stopped taking him and always had him babysat, but the last couple months I've had to start bringing him with me again and it started all over again. I have gotten much better at taking snacks and A LOT of those organic lollipops in my purse to keep him occupied while I run (literally) through the store before he finishes. But I still haven't found a solution for when I purposely miss the toy section only to run into an isle stack in the grocery section of Lightning McQueen toys that he cannot live without.

Oh the joys of motherhood =)

Dropping by from LMM, love your blog!!

Hi, I'm visiting from Little Miss Momma's and am now a follower of your blog. :) I can totally relate. With my toddler, when he doesn't want to leave this really nice farmers-market-type deli place we visit that has toy food for kids to play with, I just coax him into going by saying "Do you want to hold Mama's keys?" Usually that works. Sometimes if I still have to pay for some produce or something I'll give him the money and tel him he can give it to the lady at the cash register. I always feel like I'm walking on eggshells though because I don't want him to have the screaming fit.

Awww... toddler tantrums are the worst - I am not a mom, but I am a nanny. I wish I had some advice, but I usually try a distraction tactic and talk really softly so that he has to get closer to me to listen. I'm sure it will be different when I have my own kids, though. Lol!

Anyway, I've been reading your blog for a few weeks. But, today I'm here from Little Miss Momma in hopes to win that adorable ring :) ~ Andi

Stopping by from LMM and now following here and Facebook.
Tantrums, my youngest 13 months old, has ALREADY started doing the limp noodle thing, I have always addressed tantrums in public, because I would rather whisper threats under my breath than listen to my child scream not to mention the evil eyes I get from other people is enough to drive me out of the store with said screaming child. And believe me, if I have to leave a store because my child is screaming, he will have to do time for his crime. Only once have I actually left, and when we got home I took every single toy out of reach and made him sit in time out and he wasn't allowed to watch tv for the rest of the day.

Hey Nicole, jumping over from Little Miss Mommy! I have a four year that knows exactly when to throw a fit in public (like the day I have a horrendous headache, or my Mother in Law is with me). I simply tell him that I understand he is upset and that when he is done with his tantrum we will talk about it, but I will not listen to him scream in the store and other people won't either. If it's a smaller store where I can still see him, I will turn away and show that I am not giving him attention for that. He has gotten much better over time and I promise your little one will too!

I don't know if that's what made him keep from doing it again or not, but I was just so glad he did. ;) Good luck!

Stopped by from LMM!! I know that feeling all too well and my daughter is only 16 months. Many a times we have just abandoned carts because of the screaming fits or the evil stares from people. My child isn't always this way, I promise I tell them, only to get even more glaring looks of my unfit parenting. Sigh. But then you get the sympathetic looks from moms who know what you're going through and give you the knowing look and all you can do is breathe. Sometimes I can coax my daughter with snacks at the store, but really I just want to be able to reason with my daughter instead of having to always "bribe" her with snacks. Hang in there Mama!

every mom has been there once in their life... if you let it show that it is bothering you, it will bother other people. but you know what...they will understand because we have all been there. if your daughter has a real hard time with separation anxiety, like mine does, when this happens and she doesnt want to go with you, just say fine mommy is leaving, i am not staying here. and take a few steps away (dont really leave her). my daughter will say mommy no. and come running for me, it never fails. i tell her oh you want to come with mommy now? she says yes!! it works every time :)
